Rubber Door Mat Wall Art

This week I am featuring the most

frugal decor idea that I have ever posted about...

{ This is my version }

{ of the same look for less }

I wanted a vintage iron piece for the wall

but could not find an inexpensive one.

 Our dollar store had some

outdoor black rubber door mats.

I purchased a few then spray

painted them with Heirloom White.

from Home Depot.

I took my hand sander to them after

they were dry to give them an aged feel.

I was quite pleased with the

results and made a few in various

sizes to keep in my decor shed.

I sanded heavier in some areas

to suit my own taste

but they could be left just painted.

Below are photos of how

I did them in my home

during the fall a few years ago

This rubber mat was smaller

and I used the same

Heirloom White Spray paint

Large rubber mat that I used

over the mantel

My updated version

mixed with my coastal decor

I love how versatile they are

these mats can be cut into

smaller pieces and also use different shapes

to create a larger wall grouping.

I will be posting next week

with a dramatic take on this idea.

Thank you to all  of you lovelies

who emailed me about this project...

I loved how quick and easy

this way to create

wall art with character.

Fridays post will be on

my love for vintage chairs

I am linking this post to

Shabby Nest's Frugal Friday

Much love to all of you

Me and Mr. Dior
xoxo

Love this idea, had you not informed us it was a rubber mat, I would have never known--looks like an expensive piece of ironwork. Great job Kate!!

I think this idea is genius!
That mat looks fantastic and one would never guess that it started out as a lowly door mat.
Always checking in to find inspiration here!

Hi ladies

Please feel free to email me any questions regarding this project. Just use my link to email me. I first did this project back in 2009 and I live in Orange County The dollar store had them stocked that summer. I have found comparable ones at Wal mart for 7.99 Rite Aid during their summer products. Also Home Depot has inexpensive ones as well.

Ok...no one seemed to ask....how long until the nasty rubber smell goes away? Would love to do one but if I recall these mats STINK. Thanks for the info.

Kate said...

Hi Lisa

I let mine air out for a few days. The spray paint seemed to help seal in the rubber smell.

Warm Regards

Just found you from pinterest. What I love about this clever idea is how you've solved my above- the- fireplace problem/opportunity. My fireplace is curved and beautiful brick, so all I've been able to hang is a wreath. Now I'll be able to bend the "iron" to fit the curve of the bricks. Thanks so much!

I've been looking for some inexpensive art for my back deck wall. This is perfect! I'm going to spray mine a deep red (not quite burgandy) & sand them. I can't wait!

I love this idea, however, I would like to know if after 9 months of hanging on the wall, has the rubber sagged? Thank you!

Kate said...

Ladies if you would like the code to the paint color on my walls please use the link to email me. Vista Paints does this mix for me! I will gladly share the code with you!

As far as where to purchase they are carried at Home Depot, Wal mart if you cannot find them at your local dollar store. I have had no problems with sagging due to anchoring them on each side up top and in the middle.

Thank you for sharing you thoughts!

what can also work is cutting out the center of the mat so only the border remains, then you can use the border around a mirror or a picture as a frame.

How did you hang it? I did this same project, but used a teal color & it looks great! But I wanted it outside on my porch. Since I have brick & siding, I was a little stumped on how to hang it. I ended up using twine, but am curious how you would do it differently.... BTW, I LOVE the distressed white! Very classy!!
